Is a dark brown top-fermented monastery beer with a full body and an alcohol content of 6.5%. The mixture of different malt varieties and the addition of dark sugar gives the beer a sweetish taste with a brandy-like finish. The name Double refers to the double fermentation: once in the barrel and then in the cellar in the bottle.
The monastery Grimbergen was founded in 1128 by St. Norbert. In the turbulent history of the monastery, it was destroyed four times and rebuilt. Since then, the monastery has the Phoenix as a symbol with the inscription "Ardet Nec Consumitur" - "Burned but not destroyed". In 1956, the monastery entered into an agreement with the Maes Brewery to develop various monastic beers. Maes entered into a joint venture with the Alken breweries - together they are now Alken Maes.
