While there have been many 10 year old Port Charlottes since then, the Port Charlotte PC10 was the first 10 year old release. That was already five years ago, but for Bruichladdich it was a monumental moment back then. The Port Charlotte PC10 matured in American oak barrels and was made from malted barley at 40 ppm.

Nose: A reasonable amount of peat and brine, accompanied by vanilla, ripe banana and pineapple. To finish, a note of lemon peel.

Taste: Aggressive ! Great, big whisky. A lot of peat and tar and a lot of heat (chillies). A touch of iodine, some salt. Notes of citrus fruits.

Finish: The peat and spices linger for a long time before sweeter fruits take hold.

The whisky distillery

Bruichladdich is located on the Isle of Islay on the western shore of Loch Indaal. Their whisky is lighter and finer than the more extreme malts from the south shore of the island. This is mainly due to the fact that untypical for Islay, unpeat malt is used and the water from Rhinn's own spring is not peaty.

The distillery has a long history behind it, but probably the most important part is currently written by Head Distiller Jim McEwan. Innovative and with great attention to detail, Jim, together with his staff, always manages to keep the whisky world on tenterhooks and bring new strokes of genius to the market.
