Guyana, located in South America with borders with Brazil, Suriname and Venezuela has a direct connection to the Atlantic Ocean and can look back on a long tradition of rum production. Once home to a small country up to 300 distilleries, which emerged as a byproduct of sugar production and produced mainly for the respective colonizers Rum. Rum was formerly used for the sterilization of drinking water on the ships and was also served to the sailors to uphold morality. Rum has become therefore an important part of maritime culture. Demerara Rum has always been considered excellent because of its heavy, complex character.
