Ocucaje is one of the largest pisco producers in Peru. Acholado is a pisco made from the must of Quebranta and Italia grapes, which thrive in a fertile region in the middle of Peru's arid landscape.
Ocucaje is located south of Pisco in the middle of the Peruvian desert, which stretches between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountain range. Once emerging from the ocean, the local land has one of the highest concentrations of marine fossils. A river that has now disappeared also left behind its nutrients over the course of geological history, making Ocucaje a surprisingly fertile growing region – a lively oasis surrounded by sand and scree. The family-run company Viña Ocucaje S.A. has been based here for over 110 years, producing wines and piscos. Pisco, a distillate made from grape must, is considered the national alcoholic beverage in Peru and Chile – both countries have always been locked in a bitter dispute over exclusive production rights. Since 1947, the business has been firmly in the hands of the Rubini family. Although numerous modernizations have been carried out to date, Ocucaje has deliberately retained some traditional, artisanal production methods. Among other things, two distillation plants from 1920 are still in operation.
“Ocucaje Pisco Acholado” is a blend of the two grape varieties Italia and Quebranta.
