In the second half of the nineteenth century, Martinique was the source of the best quality sugar for Europe and the epicenter of all Caribbean sugar trade. In 1883, however, the big sugar crisis broke out on the island, because the importing countries only bought the cheaper sugar from South and Central America. A few years later, Mayor Homére Clément bought the bankrupt sugar cane farm in his village and saved it from its final demise. His plans were simple: to end the riots among the sugarcane farmers and move them to return to the fields - not to produce sugar, but to distill rum. Since then Homère Clément has been considered the father of Rhum Agricoles! Since 1887, the prestigious rums are produced according to the inherited rules of Homère and Charles Clément. The freshly pressed sugarcane juice - the distinguishing feature of Rhum Agricole - is fermented in natural fermentation over two to three days to a sugarcane wine called Vesou. The subsequent careful distillation does not destroy the distinctive aromas and flavors of the sugar cane. The initially white rum then stored for a year in new oak barrels to absorb the wood aroma. Then he refines for many more years in bourbon casks. In the cellars of this historic estate, hundreds of thousands of liters of rum are patiently waiting to be bottled and shipped all over the world.
