It is a tribute to the founder of the company, Don Julio, who began making his tequilas in 1942. Tradition has it that Don Julio Gonzalez-Fraustro Estrada originally produced his eponymous tequila only in small quantities and at the age of 17. It was not intended for sale, but for his private use. Soon Don Julio decided to start his own distillery. His goal with Don Julio was to capture the flavor of the Blue Agave grown specifically for his distillery, which grew for eight to ten years on the mineral-rich clay soil.
