The latest release from the Japanese whisky masters at Suntory: a blend of the products of all three distilleries. Yamazaki, Hakushu, Hibiki, Chita and now Toki - these are the world-renowned whisky brands of the Japanese company Suntory. It was not until 2016 that blended whisky was launched in the square bottle, with a Japanese character on the label revealing its origin. Toki is the Japanese word for time, and quite coincidentally it also resembles the surname of the current master distiller, Shingo Tokii. He selected the very special malt and grain whiskies, which make up the blend and determine the taste of grapefruit, green grapes, peppermint and thyme, from the three in-house distilleries. The official recommendation is to consume it pure, on the rocks or as a highball - that is, with ice cubes and soda water.

A blended whisky from Japan's new Hatozaki distillery: while the in-house whisky will be aged for a while, the blend is created from the company's own cask stocks, which include up to 12-year-old whiskies from North America, Scotland and Japan. Most Japanese whiskies that are not from large companies like Nikka or Suntory have their origins in traditional sake breweries. Such is the case with Hatozaki Whisky, which is produced at Akashi-Tai's Kaikyo Distillery, which began operations on the brewery's premises in 2017. In the same year, they distilled the first drops in the Scottish-built pot stills, which will be released as a signature single malt starting in 2022. This makes it obvious that the Hatozaki blended whisky launched in 2019 is not from the company's own distillery. In an interview, owner Kimio Yonezawa revealed that the majority of the whisky's ingredients come from cask stocks sourced from Scotland and the United States. A small proportion of Japanese whiskies is also present, but in Japan it is very atypical for a whisky distillery to rely on distillates from "the competition." The Hatozaki Blended Whisky is thus not a Japanese Whisky through and through, but interesting in that it combines grain spirits from three renowned whisky nations in one bottle. It also provides a good opportunity to get to know the newly launched brand and be convinced of the team's whisky expertise. The blend has a single malt content of at least 40% and contains whiskies that have been allowed to rest for up to 12 years. The flavor profile is slightly sweet, cereal, malty and fruity.

The Mars Maltage COSMO Malt Selection is a blend of Scottish and Japanese single malt whiskeys made in the Shinshu distillery. His exact age is unknown, but relatively young whiskeys are suspected in the blend. The Mars Maltage COSMO Malt Selection comes from the Shinshu distillery, which reopened in 2011 and is one of a total of nine Japanese distilleries. Located on the main island Honshu in the Japanese Alps, the distillery was founded in 1985 and then remained silent for many years. Today they have a relatively small production volume and the demand for their whiskeys exceeds the capacity of the distillery. The Mars Maltage COSMO Malt Selection is a blend of relatively young whiskeys and is made not only with the distillery's products, but with imported single malt whiskeys from Scotland, keeping its exact place of origin a secret. The alcohol content is set to 43% with the clear water, which is filtered through granitic rocks of the Japanese Alps, and then bottled. By the way, the Cosmo got its name after one of the mountains in the Alps.
