The southern Italian Puglia is one of the most productive wine-growing regions of the country. From the spur of the boot near Foggia to the tip of the heel behind Lecce, Puglia stretches for 400 kilometers. The area has the most grape varieties in southern Italy, about 80 percent of them red. Mediterranean climate and calcareous subsoils with iron oxide-rich layers above create perfect conditions for viticulture. In the dry, hot summers, the grapes ripen optimally, and the wines become deeply dark, earthy and full-bodied. Unlike the other southern regions, there are hardly any mountains here; the landscape consists mainly of plateaus and flatlands. This is a wine-growing region with enormous potential - the possibilities of the countless autochthonous grape varieties are far from exhausted.
