At 2501 meters above sea level, the Säntis is the highest mountain in the Alpstein and towers majestically over the Appenzellerland, which is known for its beverage specialties throughout Switzerland and beyond. Actually, it should be the grazing cows and their first-class dairy products that get all the attention, but with the Appenzeller Alpenbitter, the Goba mineral water and the Säntis Malt, there are several top beverage brands from the region. After an important legislative change, Karl Locher from the Locher Brewery in Appenzell began producing Säntis Malt in 1999. He used barley from the highest growing areas in the country, his own beer barrels and spring water from the Alpstein.
